Late Meiji period map of Japan now showing the country in its ascendancy. Korea is a protectorate and the Kurile islands have been added to the map in an inset on the upper left.
As well as adding Korea as a Protectorate to their Empire, a substantial rail network is appearing on the islands. As a historical footnote, the artificial channel between the northern and southern parts of the island of Tsushima is clearly visible. This was the Manzeki-Seto Canal, a strategic logistical waterway for the Japanese Navy.
