Fukuda Kumajirō

This detailed late-19th century map of Tokyo was published by Fukuda Kumajirō 福田熊次郎 (fl.1874-1895) at his shop in the Nihonbashi ward of Tokyo. It features rail lines and an inset of Yokohama in the top left corner. Portraits of Emperor
Meiji and Empress Shōken adorn either side of the map's title, and seventeen vignettes depicting notable buildings and temples decorate the map’s borders. Printer Wada Yonezo and editor Omura Tsuneshichi are also credited along the lower left border.Fukuda Kumajirō, also known as Gusokuya, was best known as a publisher of woodblock prints in Tokyo in the Meiji period. He specialised in ukiyo-e style of Japanese art popular from the mid-1700s until the end of the Meiji period in the early 20th century.
