The map shows most of the Po Valley and the drainage basin of the upper Po River. It also shows the network of canals connecting Milan to the River. These were designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
An illustrated cartouche bears a shield containing a portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederic Barbarossa, who was crowned by Pope Adrian IV in Pavia as King of Italy in 1155.
