Together with Stanford's superlative detail, the emphasis of this map is the growth of civil and military aviation in the Middle East. Red symbols mark landing strips and airfields, both military and civilian. These had been built during the Mesopotamian Campaign of the First World War, as well as during the Iraqi Revolt of the early 1920s. The Royal Air Force played a key role in both campaigns. Later, more airfields were built, establishing a network to support the oil industry.
This map just pre-dates the establishment of the Iraqi oilfields near Kirkuk in 1934 and the construction of the first pipelines to Haifa and Tripoli. An oil well is marked next to the city of Kirkuk, but none of the extraction infrastructure existed at this time. We have seen a later 1935 edition of this map with additional overprinted oil pipelines. This map, however, focuses instead on early aviation.
