John Henry Amschewitz
51 x 73 cm
Published at the start of WWI, this celebrated caricature map shows the German Eagle and the fallen Austrian clown at the centre of a melee attacked by the Russian bear, the Serbian terrier, Marianne of France, and John Bull of Britain. Meanwhile Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands look on. A reluctant Turkey sits on a barrel of gunpowder, held in place by the German Kaiser.
This is one of the rarer examples of World War I propaganda maps.
The initials J. H. A. on the lower right corner stand for the artist John Henry Amschewitz.
