Christoforus Cellarius
25 x 30 cm
Attractive map of Sicily as perceived in its classical period. A large vignette on the lower left shows Vulcan at his forge under Mount Etna. An inset on the upper left shows Sicily in relation to Malta and North Africa.
This map was first issued in the "Geographia Antiqua" an atlas of classical geography compiled by Christoforus Cellarius in 1686. The work endured an extremely long publishing life with editions recorded as late as 1812. Judging by the strength of the engraving, this map is from one of the early issues of the work. [IT3578]
