Large, spectacular two-sheet map showing modern Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Singapore together with the western Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Borneo and Java.
Mortier first issued his atlas "the Neptune Francois" in 1692 but revised and updated it both in 1696 and 1708. The maps were mainly based on the French mapmaker Jaillot who was able to access a variety of sources, including the Depot de la Marine, the archives of the King of Portugal and a collection of commercial map makers eager to contribute to a prestige project sponsored by one of the leading French statesmen of the period, Jean Marie Colbert.
For this map in particular, Mortier was also able to access French Jesuit sources as well as the famous Chevalier de Chaumont expedition of 1685/6. A reference to this expedition is made in the cartouche.
This example is characterised by glorious original full body colour. [SEAS4962]
