William Hole
28 x 18 cm
This is the third and final edition of the work in this format and was the first work to include a full set of county maps. The maps were derived from Christopher Saxton and John Norden. William Kip and William Hole engraved reduced versions of the maps of Norden and Saxton for inclusion in "Britannia".
A small but decorative map of Britain sits at the centre of the page, flanked by Neptune and Ceres, the gods of the sea and the harvest, alluding to the fertility of the island and its surrounding waters. The map is surmounted by an image of Britannia herself seated on a small rock with ships in the background. Below the map are small vignettes of Stonehenge, Roman Bath, and Winchester Cathedral.
