Rare bird's-eye view of Edinburgh from a drawing by James Gordon of Rothiemay. Gordon was the son of geographer Robert Gordon of Straloch who surveyed the city in 1646-1674. This drawing was first published by Jan Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1647, but was then re-issued by Frederick de Wit. This example is from a new plate engraved by Andrew Johnston circa 1710 and then sold over a century later by John Bowles in London, a testament to the enduring appeal of this splendid view.
The view is beautifully detailed with each individual building carefully drawn and placed. Three views of the city and the castle are included alongside the map, as are decorative putti, coats of arms, and a grand dedication to George Lockhart, a Scottish writer and Tory MP for Edinburgh from 1708-1715.
