J.P. Sayer
20 x 26 cm
Charming pictorial map of Fleet Street with illustrations of local landmarks and notes about local historical figures and events. Noteworthy persons mentioned include Dr Johnson and James Boswell who first met here, and where Dr Johnson lived in Gough Square, the printer and publisher Wynkyn de Worde, and Samuel Pepys who was born at Salisbury Court near St Bride's. Also noted, is the end point of the Great Fire of London, the printing trade and national newspapers which occupied Fleet Street, as well as the Law Courts and historic pubs, taverns and banks.
This map is one a of a series of maps of London neighbourhoods, designed by J.P. Sayer and published monthly in the Strand Magazine from 1946-48. The maps are playful and accessible to an ordinary reader, but also contain a surprising amount of history and detail to explore.
