A vintage London transport map showing the Underground network, bus routes, and railway lines as they were in 1959. In contrast to the standard schematic Underground maps of the period, this map shows the network geographically, overlaid on a map of London. The blue roundel logo border employed on the Underground station poster maps of this period appears here as well, creating an attractive continuity between London Transport's various map offerings. Interestingly, National Trust properties are also marked on the map.
The back of the map includes eight charmingly mid-century illustrations of London's tourist landmarks, including the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament, and the new Royal Festival Hall. A full list of landmarks is also provided alongside the nearest Underground station for each location.
Benjamin Getzel Lewis is credited as the designer of this map. Lewis produced maps for London Transport from 1931 to the 1960s, including Underground maps and bus maps. This design was published in multiple editions and also in a larger poster size for display on station walls.
