Edward Stanford
100 x 61 cm
Vintage London Underground poster intended for display in and around Hyde Park Corner Station. The poster employs Ordnance Survey mapping to show in great detail the area within showing 1/4 mile of the station. This includes the eastern end of Knightsbridge, Belgrave Square, and Lowndes Square. The area is shown before the construction of the Hyde Park Corner roundabout and before the conversion of St George's Hospital into the Lanesborough Hotel.
Similar posters were created for almost every station in the network, though the designs do differ year-on-year. Some are printed only in black and white, whilst others feature full printed colour. Some use a simplified version of the Ordnance Survey map, whilst others, like this, include every minute detail featured on OS maps. This example was created and published by Stanford's Geographical Establishment, one of London's leading cartographic firms.
