Gerard van Keulen
61 x 102 cm
Van Keulen's large chart is one of the most spectacular maps of this region. Stretching from the north coast of Ireland, it shows the large islands of Skye, Mull, Iura and Isla. The Peninsula known as the Mull of Kintyre is prominently shown. The northernmost point on the mainland is Cape Wrath.
Fundamentally, the map is based on the survey of Scotland first published by Joan Blaeu in 1654, with the islands and peninsulas showing similar features to this survey. Although the map maker John Adair had produced a new series of maps after Blaeu's publication, financial difficulties prevented him from widely distributing his maps, explaining van Keulen's reliance on an eighty year old survey.
