The canal in the inset is actually the Second Welland Canal, (out of four) and is a strategic waterway connecting Lakes Erie and Ontario. The inset also shows the parallel railway used to help transport cargo, the Welland Railway.
The geographical base of the map goes back to the early 19th century surveys by Smyth but augmented with later work by other map makers such as Bouchette.
