Emanuel Bowen
43 x 54 cm
Bowen was one of the leading map makers of 18th century England and his legacy to cartography is enormous. Possibly his most famous work is the “Large English Atlas” a costly and painstaking new survey of English county maps published in a style suitable for the cusp of the “Age of Reason”. Hence the inclusion of several panels text of historical, geographical and commercial information on the face of the map. This was a practice that was begun in a more haphazard manner by earlier map makers such as John Speed and Hermann Moll in particular but Bowen expanded and formalized it.
These new county maps were issued in three formats, the “Large English Atlas”, which were the largest, the “Royal English Atlas” which is a medium sized version and believed to be the rarest and the “Atlas Anglicanus” which is a small version.
Our example is from the Royal English Atlas.
