London Magazine
18 x 23 cm
Colonial-era Connecticut and Rhode Island divided into counties and townships.
This small map commissioned from Thomas Kitchin by the London Magazine is extremely important for collectors of New England and Connecticut as it is believed to be the first map to focus on these colonies.
The source for this map is most likely the wall map of New England produced by Braddock Mead (John Green) for Thomas Jefferys first issued in 1755. Jefferys and Kitchin had a master/apprentice relationship so the latter would have had easy access to the piece. Mead in turn is thought to have used much of the survey made by William Douglass, which was also published in 1755.
