Unusual French edition of the second map of London issued by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
This French edition of the map was published by Hachette and Co and enclosed within a guide to London edited by E. Reclus. This is the later version of the map, without the vignette below the cartouche. In the South Kensington area is a note stating the land on which the future Royal Horticultural Gardens would stand had been leased from Her Majesty’s Commissioners for the 1851 Exhibition. The Gardens would be finished in 1861.
