Stanislao Stucchi
122 x 99 cm
A magnificent and exceptionally detailed wall map of Italy published just two years before the unification of the Italian states into the Kingdom of Italy. An infographic diagram along the upper margin shows the relative heights of the mountains of Italy from north (left) to south (right). Etna is illustrated as an erupting volcano. Population statistics are provided for each of the regions of Italy. Railways, battlefields, and ruins are also marked.
This map combines geographic accuracy and decorative embellishment to spectacular effect with easily-overlooked details like the swirling clouds surrounding the title, a steamship sailing in the Adriatic, and beautiful swash lettering adding a great deal of character to the map.
