The map shows the lines of 50 distinct railroad companies, all of which were listed in the Stock Exchange Daily Official List. Prior to the railroad mergers of the 1920s, railway companies formed the majority of listed companies on both the New York and London Stock Exchanges, and rampant speculation occurred amongst English investors whenever a new US or Canadian railway venture was launched.
The map's revised date of October, 1913, suggests that Stanfords likely intended to reissue this map many times to keep up with the latest developments. However, we have only been able to trace one other institutional copy of this map - at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
