Willem & Jan Blaeu
38 x 51 cm
The Persian Empire now encompassing modern Iran. On this map it is shown as stretching from the River Indus in the east to a short distance west of the River Tigris.
The geography of the map is based on earlier maps by Ortelius and Mercator Hondius who in turn based their maps on the seminal map by Gastaldi published in 1564.
Blaeu's map became the iconic 17th century map of Persia and was imitated by both Jansson and de Wit among many others.
Although the map is dated 1634 on the plate, it would have been issued within French editions of the atlas between 1635-8.
