Artois in northern France issued by Ortelius and based on a map by Iacobus Surhonius of Mons.
This is the second and much rarer plate of Artois, only appearing in four Ortelius editions. Jacques Surhon first drew this map in 1554 but due to security reasons, it was not published until 1579 by Ortelius. This variant, with a totally different title, was issued in 1587. It was then published in 1598 and 1592 with one final edition in 1603. The commoner version of the map, with the Latinised title, "Atrebatum" is present in all other editions of Ortelius's atlases. It is not known why the two plates were used but Marcel van den Broecke, in his work, "Ortelius Atlas Maps" speculates that it may be to do with copyright.
During this period Artois was part of Flanders and the region was greatly unsettled by the Eighty Years War. It was then acquired by France during the Thirty Years War in the early 17th century.
