Abraham Ortelius
36 x 49 cm
The first European map of Japan from the first modern atlas. Based on the manuscript provided by Ludovico Teixera, map maker to the court of the King of Portugal who in turn received it from the surveys of the Jesuits in Japan. Embellished with three large ships and portraying Korea as an island, it was hugely influential and the standard source map for the country until 1655. Original hand colour. French text on verso (image available on request). [SEAS4865]
