Geographically the map is based on the survey published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1843. It has been substantially updated particularly in the interior and with political boundaries, showing the areas controlled by the Ottoman Empire, the Omani Empire and the a large swathe of the interior of the Peninsula are meant to show the possessions of the Second Saudi Kingdom or the Emirate of Nejd. Due to lack of confirmation, these borders are tenuous at best.
Despite the lack of knowledge, the interior does show a substantial network of trade and pilgrimage routes, noting a far greater interest in the region.
