The map details the route of the Grand Surrey Canal, a cargo transportation route, primarily for timber heading to the Surrey Commercial Docks. It was opened in the early 19th Century and closed progressively from the 1940, eventually being completely closed in the 1970s. The route took cargo from the banks of the River Thames all the way to the Camberwell Basin, passing underneath the Old Kent Road as seen here on this map.
