Separately issued example of Arrowsmith's map of the Cape of Good Hope. This version bears the unusual extra flap on the upper right which is usually missing in the atlas version.
Arrowsmith’s map was initially issued in 1834 and immediately became the most accurate map of the region. Due to his connections, Arrowsmith was able to access the maps of the Colonial Office; in this case, this map is a reduction of a larger manuscript drawn by L. Hebert, a map maker in the employ of the Colonial Office. He is credited on the lower right. Hebert’s map is now stored in the British National Archives.
Arrowsmith’s map was used in several official publications as well as by other authors. It received several updates and remained the most accurate map of the region until the late 1850s when it was superseded by the cartography of Henry Hall.
