Description:
As noted in the title, the islands were originally called "Fortunate Islands" or "Islands of Fortune". During the fifteenth century, the island of Gran Canaria became famous for the brave defence deployed by its natives against the landings of the conquistadores. It was these colonisers that then called the archipelago, "the Islands of Canaria", from which they were later called "Canary Islands". The elaborate cartouche depicts a marine scene of nudes, boats and sea creatures.
