Description:
Woodcut Ptolemaic world map by one of the greatest early mapmakers, Martin Waldseemuller. Based on the scholarship of the Greco-Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemy. Published in the 1513 and 1520 editions of Ptolemy's Geographia produced by Waldseemuller and Ringmann starting in around 1505.

Rodney Shirley describes this map as "one of the most attractive Ptolemaic world maps produced". The map is surround by twelve windheads, each with a unique face. Probably for technical reasons, the strip of land which normally connects the bottom of Africa to Western Asia, thereby enclosing the Indian Ocean, has been left off the map. The region north of Britain , including Scandinavia, is also blank and is simply labeled Mare Congelatum, the 'Frozen Sea'.
