Description:
The first printed map of Wigtownshire. The geography is derived from Timothy Pont, a native Scottish surveyor, whose manuscript maps represent the earliest known attempt at a detailed mapping of Scotland.

With the help of Scottish publishers and government officials, Pont's maps were acquired by the Blaeu family, the leading Dutch mapmakers of the age. They were compiled and reworked over the course of a decade before finally being published as Volume V of the Blaeu "Atlas Novus". This volume is recognized as the first printed atlas of Scotland.
