William Heather: Improved Chart of the Bermudas drawn from the Best Surveys

Map: WIND4089

Cartographer: William Heather
Title: Improved Chart of the Bermudas drawn from the Best Surveys
Date: 1805
Published: London
Width: 15 inches / 39 cm
Height: 25 inches / 64 cm
Map ref: WIND4089
Description:
One of the rarest and most beautiful charts of Bermuda published by William Heather. The island sits behind its famous reef and the mapmaker gives detailed instructions for navigators on the map. Multiple comments attempt to show safe routes as well as pointing out dangers both on the reef and on the island. Bermuda's importance increased dramatically during the Napoleonic War both for trade and military purposes and this would have been the most accurate map available to anyone outside the Royal Navy, who were in the process of performing their own survey at this time.
