Description:
This piece maps two of the main Atlantic archipelagos; The Canary Islands and Madeira. Both controlled by colonial powers, Spain (the Canaries) and Portugal (Madeira), and providing important resting ports for trading ships sailing to and from the New World. The Salvage Islands are also represented between these two in the centre of the map. Coral reefs that surround the islands make it difficult to land boats, as noted here with crosses. There has never been a permanent settlement on the islands though for years they have served as nesting sites for seabirds and have now become a World Heritage Site. Spain and Portugal both claim sovereignty over the Savage Islands. [AFR5624]
