Description:
This is the first available map of the Gulf Stream. It is engraved by J. Poupard and appeared in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. It is based on Franklin's own researches after he was told of "a river in the ocean" by his cousin, Timothy Folger. The accompanying text on the left margin of the map, signed by Franklin, gives detailed instructions as to how to avoid sailing against the Gulf Stream when travelling from Newfoundland to New York. This is a precis of his article in Volume II of the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society and is included in the price of the map.
